Alt-Country
In the heart of Wellington's vibrant musical tapestry, Sig Wilder emerges as a luminary, a true maverick of the alt-country scene. Born to the American midwest and lives under the Southern Cross, Sig's music is an ethereal journey through the rolling hills and distant plains of Aotearoa, weaving the very essence of Americana into the fabric of New Zealand's musical landscape.
Sig's sonic palette is a rich tapestry of influences, a harmonious blend of kiwi authenticity and American grit. His songs, like hidden valleys, reveal themselves slowly, drawing you into a world where melancholic ballads mingle with foot-stomping anthems. His voice, weathered and wise, carries the weight of stories untold, each note a testament to a life well-traveled.
From the moment his fingers dance upon the strings of his guitar, you're transported to the dusty roads of the American Southwest, only to be gently pulled back by the enchanting winds of the Southern Hemisphere. Sig's songwriting, a tapestry of emotion, is a testament to his ability to straddle the realms of introspection and shared experience.
With Wellington as his muse, Sig Wilder stands at the forefront of a reviving alt-country scene in Aotearoa. Through his evocative storytelling and heartfelt performances, he's carving out a niche all his own, one that defies geographic boundaries and musical conventions.
Sig Wilder & Friends are Aotearoa’s alt-country storytellers. The band was started in 2021 by singer-songwriter Sig Wilder and musician Mads Taylor (Tahini Bikini, MADS), who quickly recruited Kei Heke (Tahini Bikini, Awkward Talks) on bass and Sofia Machray (Sofia Machray) on guitar and vocals. Their debut single, "Stop Myself," sets the stage for their forthcoming album, "Cowboy Practice”—the heartbreaking yet hopeful tale of a modern cowboy. The song explores the struggle to overcome self-imposed limitations, enveloped in the band's signature Americana sound. From the first note to the final chord, their captivating atmosphere draws listeners into a world where emotions are laid bare. With heartfelt storytelling and infectious melodies, this Te Whanganui-a-Tara based band brings a unique twist to the alt-country genre.
